Family Portraits in Columbia SC: When to Schedule and What to Expect

There's a moment a lot of parents hit without warning. You're scrolling through your phone and realize the most recent photo of your whole family together is from a birthday party two years ago, or worse, a screenshot from a group text. The kids have changed. You've changed. And somehow there's nothing to show for it.

That moment is usually what brings someone to family portraits, not a milestone on the calendar. If that's where you are right now, here's what to know about timing, planning, and finding the right fit for your family session in the Columbia, Irmo, Lexington, or Chapin area.

Timing matters more than people think

Early fall, around late September through October, gives you soft light and cooler temperatures without the trees being fully bare yet, which is why it's the most requested season for family sessions here. Spring is a close second, especially if you want green backdrops and want the photos back in time for holiday cards without the fall rush.

If you're planning around a specific reason (a new baby joining the family, a move, a grandparent visiting from out of town), book as soon as that date is on your radar. Good time slots for outdoor family sessions fill up weeks in advance during peak season, so the families who plan a little ahead end up with more choices, not just more stress avoided.

What should you wear for family photos?

This is usually the part that stresses people out the most, so keep it simple. Coordinate, don't match. Pick two or three colors from the same family (soft neutrals, dusty blues, warm earth tones) and let each person's outfit vary in shade and texture within that palette. Avoid busy patterns and logos, since they pull focus from faces. And don't forget shoes. Bare feet work for some settings, but if everyone's in their nicest outfit and then sneakers, it shows in the photos.

If you want a head start, I put together an outfit guide clients can pull from before their session. Just reach out and I'll send it over.

Location says almost as much as the photos do

Columbia, Irmo, Lexington, and Chapin all have great outdoor spots for family sessions, from open fields with natural light to areas with texture like old brick or tree cover. I'll usually suggest a location based on your family's personality and the season, but if you already have a place that means something to you (a park you visit every summer, your own backyard), that works beautifully too. Some of the best family galleries come from places that already hold memories, not just pretty backdrops. And once we're there, the goal isn't a string of stiff poses. Kids do better with a little room to move and be themselves, so the session leaves space for real interaction, a little chaos, a lot of laughing, and usually a few in-between moments nobody expected to love as much as they do.

If your family hasn't had photos taken together in a while, or ever, that's exactly who these sessions are for. You don't need a reason beyond wanting to remember this season of your life. Reach out and we'll find a time that works.
